Repeated letters look identical

You type letters or coffee and the repeated letter is identical both times. Two causes.

1. The font holds one form of each letter

Moving between several forms as you type is part of Pro. A Free font settles on one form per letter, so every e is the same e — working as intended rather than broken.

Two things are needed for repeats to vary:

• A Pro font, which carries the variation
• More than one form of that letter, which comes from you writing it more than once

A Pro font still repeats a letter you only wrote once. Write your common letters a few times — Your a's: versions of a letter.

2. The app is ignoring it

If your font does vary in one place and not another, the app is the difference.

- PowerPoint never applies it, in any version. Your letters and spacing still come through. More - Older Word documents opened in compatibility mode switch off modern font features. A new document behaves correctly. Using your font in Word - An older font file made before mid-2026 may not carry the variation in a way Word reads. Remake and re-download it.

Browsers, design tools, print and current Word all apply it.

How to tell which

Type the same word in a browser and in the app that looks wrong. If the browser varies the letters and the app does not, it is cause 2. If both are identical, it is cause 1.

Why it matters at all

Identical repeats are the clearest signal that text was set rather than written. Every letter can be perfect and the page still reads as a font, because no hand repeats exactly.
