A character's own page
One character, every version you wrote of it, and a few real words set in your font exactly as it ships. Open it from the Letters wall.
What you see
The header counts your versions and says how many of them rotate through your words — every version you keep rotates, unless it is flagged, placed, marked as a flourish, or resting. The words band sets real words in your font and marks each letter with the number of the version that drew it, so you can see which versions your font reaches for. Under it, your versions sit side by side in the order you wrote them.
Writing another version
The stage on the page takes one character, the way it comes out naturally. Add → puts it with your other versions. While it is on screen, a gold ring marks your newest version so you can find it in the words.
The controls under a version
Pick a version. The same controls sit in the same place for every version, on this page and on the Letters wall:
- Standard | Flourish. What kind of version it is. Standard is your everyday writing; a flourish leaves the everyday rotation until you place it. When your font has set a version aside with a warning mark, neither is chosen yet — your call. Choosing Standard puts the version back into your words and Inkling does not ask again. What counts as a flourish.
- ★ Default. The version your font leads with. On a Free account it is the only version the font uses. For a flourish this slot becomes Place, or shows where it is placed — a flourish is never the default.
- Rest. Keeps the version but takes it out of your words. It shows as ✓ Resting while it rests; tap again to put it back. The default cannot rest (it always rotates), a flagged version is already out until you choose Standard, and a flourish is out until you place it. Resting is a Pro setting: a Free font uses the ★ version only.
- Fix. For a version that was read wrong: name the character it really is, or circle what is really on the page.
- Delete. Removes the version. Your only version of a character cannot be deleted; write another first.
Below the controls, the page says what there is to say about that version and nothing more: why a version was set aside (with What we measured and See it as written), where a flourish is placed, or what a flourish does on a Free account.
The marks on a version
- A star: the default.
- A warning mark: set aside by your font, waiting on your call.
- A filled sweep: a flourish you marked, waiting for its place.
- Three dots with one filled: placed, and where in a word.
- A shaded version: resting — you kept it, but it is not in your words.
Seeing one version in words
The words band shows what your font happens to pick for those words, which is never every version. Pick a version and the band redraws the same words with that version at every one of its letters, so you can judge any of them in company — the ones that rotate and the ones that rest. The letters on either side keep the spacing the font gave the version they replaced, so read it as a preview of the shape, not of the fit.
On a Free account
Everything you write is kept. A Free account's font uses your ★ version of each letter; a Pro font uses more of them. What Pro adds to your font.
