Where the spacing comes from

In a Pro font it is measured from your own writing — the natural gap you leave between letters when you write words, and the word spacing of your real lines. A tight hand gets tight spacing and a generous hand gets generous spacing.

A Free font uses even, standard spacing by design — tidy rather than yours. If a Free font reads evenly-but-not-quite-you, that is the tier, not a fault — Free and Pro: what's different.

In a Pro font the spacing usually is yours. What often reads as "too wide" is something else.

The usual real cause: missing joins

On a joined-up hand, letters that should connect instead sit as separate shapes with a gap between them. The gap is correct — the connection is what is missing, and its absence reads as looseness.

The other cause: no kerning

Certain pairs need to tuck closer than their own widths suggest. Without kerning those pairs gap while everything else looks fine, which reads as uneven rather than uniformly wide. Kerning is part of Pro — What Pro adds to your font.

If it is genuinely too tight

Letters touching or overlapping usually means letters written unusually wide relative to their height, so their edges reach into the neighboring space. Rewriting the offending letters at your normal proportions is the fix.

Worth checking first

Compare the same sentence in a browser against the app you are looking at. Apps differ in what they apply, and one app spacing differently from the rest is an app problem rather than a font problem — It looks different in one app.
