You do not have to finish first

You can make a font at any point. A font of twenty letters is a real font — it has twenty letters and no more. Anything you have not written is not in the file, so when you type it your computer substitutes a letter from another font, and the join in the middle of the word is obvious.

Most people make an early font to see their hand working, then keep filling in.

What to write first

Cover the everyday alphabet before anything else, and inside that, favour the letters you actually type:

- e, t, a, o, i, n, s, r, h appear constantly. Get these right first. - q, x, z, j appear rarely. They matter for completeness, not for how your writing looks. - Capitals matter more than their frequency suggests, because they start sentences and names where the eye lands. - Full stops, commas and apostrophes appear more often than most letters. Do not leave them to last: Punctuation and marks.

Missing versus locked

Two different things show as absent:

- Not yet written — you have not put it in your hand. Write it. - Beyond your tier — written and kept, but held out of the font until you upgrade. Nothing is lost, and it appears when you upgrade and remake the font.

Coming back later

Your writing stays in your account. Add letters whenever you like and make the font again — Adding letters to a font you've made.
